D’Decor was one of the leading manufacturers of curtain and upholstery fabrics in India and was looking forward to starting a new method of distribution which basically comprised of cutting fabrics and selling to retailers as per the quantities wanted by retailers. The market previously used to get fully packed rolls and there was no concept of Just in Time inventory. However D’Decor wanted to change the market scenario and go with expanding the market.

Challenges

Traditionally retailers used to stock a limited number of SKU’s in their store, since storage required real estate and full rolls costed money to purchase. However this limited the number of retailers greatly and the choices available were also limited. However with the cut length system, the retailer had to just keep the catalogs of the manufacturer and the entire inventory was kept with the distributor. As and when the retailer got an order the same needed to be shared with the distributor who would then cut the fabric and courier the fabric to the store.

Solution

We made an completely online platform, which helped retailers to see the stocks available at the distributors warehouse. Once the customer placed the order, the order went to a direct processing workflow which helped the distributor to cut and pack the fabric and send the same using a logistics partner to the retailer.

The use of just in time inventory increased the number of SKU’s that a retailer could showcase from a hunders to few hundreds of thousand. In addition it also gave the retailer to power to keep a smaller retail store while still being able to offer choice in designs. This also spurred a growth in the number of retail outlets as more and more retail stores started opening up since the investment was now lower and the choices were now more.

The entire supply chain which catered to niche furnishing stores also came up which created in itself a whole new industry and business potential.
